Viral pneumonia can be caused either by the influenza virus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and the herpes or varicella virus. It could also be caused by the virus that brings on the common cold (parainfluenza and adenoviruses).
- Winter and spring are the months with the highest incidences of Influenza A and B. Along with the respiratory symptoms, headache, fever and muscle ache could also be present. Chances of catching flu can be greatly reduced by taking the flu vaccine every year.

- The incidences of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are the maximum in the spring season. Children are the ones usually affected and hence outbreaks of this virus are common in day care centers.
- Unless the individual is infected with chickenpox, herpes or varicella pneumonia infections are rare.
- Adenovirus and parainfluenza viral pneumonias could also show symptoms of the common cold like runny nose and pink eye (conjunctivitis).
- As of March 19, 2003, the specific pathogen responsible for SARS had not been identified, a viral etiology was believed to be responsible.
